The National Agricultural Foundation of Nigeria (NAFN) on Tuesday declared Kano, Bauchi and AKwa Ibom states as winners of the 2012 Agricultural Show.
Dr Samuel Negedu, the National Coordinator of the foundation, announced the winners at the closing ceremony of the show at Km 28, Tudun Wada, Nassarawa State.
Kano State came first with a prize of N3 million while Bauchi and Akwa Ibom placed second and third respectively receiving N2 million and N1 million as their prize money.
Negedu said that the states were selected based on the skills and items showcased which were in line with Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA).
The Kano State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Baraka Sani, who spoke to NAN after receiving the prize , described the gesture by the foundation as “encouraging.”
Sani urged other participants to work together for the success of the agricultural sector.
“We feel great. The show was quite educating and encouraging.
“Despite the fact that we came first, there are other areas of interest we can collaborate to broaden our skills.
“I was happy going round other pavilions, seeing what we all have to bring to the table. We all need to join hands together to make progress in agriculture in Nigeria.”
Earlier, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) also declared Kano State winner of the World Food Day exhibition category.
The state made its stand quite fascinating with its mobile zoo, livestock, vegetables, spices, grains, food and cash crops.
The state Ministry of Agriculture and the 44 local government area councils of the state took part in the show.
Bauchi, Kogi, Benue, Akwa Ibom, Plateau, Nasarawa were among the other states that participated.
The show is an annual event organised by the foundation to coincide with the World Food Day celebration.
