Malam Musa Isa, an irrigation farmer in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State, made the appeal in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Wurno.
He said that such facilities would help in storing vegetables and other farm produce all-year round.
The large-scale farmer said that storage facilities would encourage farmers to engage in mass production of assorted food items for local consumption and export.
“We produce assorted vegetables like tomatoes, pepper, cabbage and lettuce in large quantities. But the inability of the farmer to store his excess produce is responsible for the high cost of food items.
” This is so, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, because of the high demand by consumers,” he said.
He said farm produce would continue to be scarce unless the Federal Government provided storage facilities nationwide.
Isa said the nation was blessed with vast land needed to produce various crops.
“But lack of modern farming methods has affected agricultural development in the country.” (NAN)
